If you are a paddlecraft (fishing ski) angler,
the Oceanographic Research Institute would really
appreciate your help.
Pierre Pradervand, a project scientist with the
ORI, is conducting a survey to establish the extent
and relative social, economic and environmental
impacts of the KwaZulu-Natal paddlecraft fishery.
While
the paddlecraft fishery has been around for decades,
it has seen a recent increase in popularity possibly
as a result of the soaring costs associated with
the more traditional skiboat fishery, limited
beach access for the rock and surf anglers and
the production of more portable and easily launchable
fishing skis.
No
formal data exist as to the extent, impacts and/or
benefits of this fishery. Furthermore, with the
expected further development and expansion of
this fishery, it is important to understand this
fishery to ensure appropriate management.
All
paddlecraft fishers, irrespective of the type
of craft used, are encouraged to complete the
questionnaire. Participation in the survey will
enhance the knowledge-base on the fishery, and
in so doing you will be contributing towards the
wise management of our linefish resources and
helping to formalise the fine sport of paddlecraft
fishing.
All information submitted in the questionnaire
will remain confidential, and no details will
be passed onto any third party without the express
consent of the respondent.
