Expressions
of Interest are invited for the following positions
at
the Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) in Durban.
|

The
Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI) is a not-for-profit
and non-government marine research institute located
at the uShaka Marine Park. ORI is part of the South
African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR)
and has provided scientific services to various local
and international marine resource management agencies
for the past 50 years. ORI scientists generate important
scientific publications and the institute also functions
as a research institute of the University of KwaZulu-Natal,
thereby undertaking supervision of post-graduate students.

| Several
permanent positions have become available at ORI. Each
position will be subject to a probation period of six
months and includes compulsory membership of the SAAMBR
Provident Fund. Expressions of interest, comprising a
motivation and succinct CV of no more than two pages,
should be submitted on or before Friday 30 May 2008.
Successful prospects will be asked to submit a more detailed
and formal application. If you have not received a response

Fisheries Scientist
|
An
important thrust of ORI's research portfolio involves
the numerical assessment of living marine resources, including
teleost, elasmobranch and crustacean stocks. Increasingly,
this research is being conducted in collaboration with
other institutions in the West Indian Ocean (WIO) region,
especially concerning resources that are shared between
countries. These programmes include the South West Indian
Ocean Fisheries Project (SWIOFP). ORI needs to employ
a fisheries scientist to undertake and assist with these
fisheries assessments at the local and regional level.
The successful candidate will work in close collaboration
with senior ORI scientists in developing fisheries as
well as ecosystem models.
Responsibilities include:
Contributing to the development and implementation of
regional fisheries research projects,
The collection and analysis of fisheries data, either
independently or collectively in conjunction with regional
partners,
The production of reports to reflect research progress
and outputs
Preparation of publications for peer-reviewed scientific
papers
Liaising with local and regional collaborators to maintain
consistency in joint ventures and related tasks.
Other tasks relating to ORI scientific work as may be
specified by the director from time to time.
Requirements include:
A postgraduate degree in an appropriate field such as
fisheries science, applied mathematics or statistics,
Demonstrable experience in fisheries science and/or ecosystem
modelling , with a focus on invertebrate resources being
desirable
A publication record
A demonstrable interest in fisheries and conservation,
A good command of spoken and written English. French would
be an advantage,
Good scientific writing skills,
Willingness to undertake a certain amount of regional
travel and time at sea. |

Assistant Librarian (part time)
|
The
David Davies Memorial library of ORI is an outstanding
specialist marine reference facility which has been in
existence for many years. There are extensive holdings
of journals, books, reprints, audio-visual material, etc
which have been catalogued on a purpose-written database;
these are continuously updated as new material is received.
The library provides and important service to ORI scientists,
students and to other local and internationally-based
scientists and institutions. An assistant librarian position
is available for a person who has been trained as a librarian
and who has strong administrative skills.
Responsibilities include:
Maintenance of the inter-library loan system Issuing,
returning and shelving material; monitoring of issued
material
Dealing with basic requests from users
Cataloguing of new journals
Shelf-reading and displays
General administrative support to the library and senior
librarian
Any other reasonable tasks identified by the librarian
or director of ORI
Requirements include:
Matric exemption with a minimum C aggregate,
An appropriate tertiary qualification, with a B. Tech
as a minimum,
Library experience, including related information technology,
would be a considerable advantage,
Computer literacy
A good command of spoken and written English
A demonstrable interest in conservation or marine biology.
