Working with us

From time to time ORI hosts a visiting scientist, either on an exchange programme, or as a sabbatical. This page is dedicated to those visitors who came from afar, contributed to our scientific community, and left a little piece of themselves behind.

Prof Jorge Santos

Prof Jorge Santos from the Norwegian College of Fishery Science at the University of Tromsø spent a year’s sabbatical at ORI, returning to Norway at the end of June 2012.

A man of boundless energy, Jorge had a very productive time at the Institute. He originally intended to use his fisheries statistics skills to assist ORI scientists with the analysis of data collected from the SWIOF Programme, but soon got involved in other projects. He put together and presented a course on advanced fisheries statistics and the use of the general linear model in his spare time, and helped ORI’s postgraduate students enormously with the analysis of their project data.

At the end of Jorge’s year at ORI, he had seven new papers in preparation for publication, and had made a number of South African friends. He also found time to learn to surf, go SCUBA diving, sailing, mountain bike riding and visited almost all of the nature reserves in KwaZulu-Natal. He also occasionally ran to work from his home in Umhlanga Rocks, a distance of 20 km!

Having Jorge at ORI brought in many new ideas, analytical and technical skills in a field that was previously lacking, and a fresh approach to tackling scientific questions. Hopefully he will be back soon to work with us on the NORHED project, a new initiative in which Norwegian scientists and ORI scientists are hoping to collaborate.
